How to Enjoy Music

Updated: Nov 5, 2020

You've probably heard it or thought about it before: music can majorly impact your emotions. But why? Why does music have such an impact on how we feel? After all, it's really just a bunch of cleverly arranged vibrations recorded in a studio by somebody else. Yet people can become so attached to music. They will let it define who they are, who they should be, and even how they should act, and many times without even realizing it.

Music can find its way into a person's life through just about nearly anything. Nowadays, it is often as simple as opening an app and a few button presses before you're listening away to whatever you find best fits you. But how does somebody find music that just "fits you?" More often than not it happens without you ever realizing it. You will come across a specific song or genre that sticks out to you, whether that be through the lyrics, beat, mood, or whatever else you seem to notice and find interesting. You might think to yourself that you have found something that you actually enjoy. And that's it. Really, all it takes is just a little bit of exploring before you find something that sticks out to you. That's why it is so easy for anybody to pick it up.

A good example of this is when you find somebody who doesn't actually listen to the type of music you do. When you try and listen to their music, you might think it sounds completely different, almost as if they are speaking a different language. But that's the point, because to that person, that type of music is their own language. It's what they use to describe themselves, it's how they can speak their emotions without physically saying anything.

For something that has become so widely adopted by nearly everybody in today's society, music doesn't seem to always be given the credit that it's due. Although people may obsess over a specific artist, band, or genre, it seems people in general do not look any further beyond the "fanboy aspect." And for the most part, that's alright. Sometimes, things in life are not meant to be overthought, but rather simply taken in during the moment. However, if you truly look into what type of music you listen to (or somebody else's music), you may discover something about yourself that you never realized before. And that's the beauty of music: you can make it whatever you want it to be, you just have to take the dive and find the sound that plays loudest to you.
